Where to stay in Wenzhou

Central Lucheng contains many of Wenzhou’s hotels, commercial streets, restaurants, offices, and transport links close to the Ou River. It is one of the most practical areas for a first visit because Wuma Street, Jiangxin Islet connections, and several central attractions are close to it.
Best for: First visits, central sightseeing, restaurants, and transport access
What to expect: Busy avenues, shops, restaurants, offices, and steady daytime traffic
Hotel prices: Nightly rates at well-reviewed properties typically range from ¥450 to ¥1,000 ($70–$150).
Distance to major sights: Wenzhou Museum is usually 10 to 20 minutes away by taxi, while the Ou River waterfront is closer.
Quietness: Side streets are generally quieter than the main commercial roads after dinner.
Main trade-off: Hotels beside major roads can receive traffic noise throughout the day.
Good to know: Choose accommodation just off the busiest avenues if you want central access with less road noise.

Wuma Street is one of central Wenzhou’s best-known pedestrian and shopping districts, with heritage buildings, snack shops, retail streets, restaurants, and small hotels packed into a compact area. It is particularly useful for travelers who want traditional restaurants close to their accommodation.
Best for: Food, shopping, evening walks, and central sightseeing
What to expect: Pedestrian streets, snack counters, shops, restaurants, and heavier foot traffic in the evening
Hotel prices: Rooms in well-reviewed properties generally cost ¥400–¥1,075 ($60–$160) per night.
Distance to major sights: Wuma Street itself is on your doorstep, while Jiangxin Islet departure points require a short taxi ride toward the river.
Quietness: Streets behind the pedestrian core are quieter.
Main trade-off: The busiest central blocks can feel crowded during shopping and dining hours.
Good to know: Check vehicle access if you are arriving by taxi, since some hotels sit inside or beside pedestrianized streets.

The riverside stretches along the Ou River in central Wenzhou. It offers walking paths, modern hotels, and easier access to Jiangxin Islet than inland neighborhoods. It is less dense than Wuma Street while remaining close enough to reach the commercial center by taxi or a longer walk.
Best for: River views, evening walks, quieter hotels, and Jiangxin Islet
What to expect: Waterfront paths, newer buildings, evening walkers, and fewer shops than around Wuma Street
Hotel prices: Hotels commonly charge ¥360–¥930 ($53–$140) per night.
Distance to major sights: Jiangxin Islet is nearby, while Wuma Street generally takes 10 to 15 minutes by taxi depending on your exact hotel.
Quietness: Most waterfront blocks become quieter later in the evening.
Main trade-off: You may walk a bit farther for the densest restaurant and shopping clusters.
Good to know: Pick this area if you want river access, but check whether your hotel faces the waterfront, since those rooms can pick up more evening activity.
Outer parts of Ouhai, Longwan, Yongjia, Pingyang, and Cangnan are not very convenient for a sightseeing-focused stay. Central Lucheng, Wuma Street, and the Ou River waterfront keep most first-visit plans simpler.

Metro
for longer distances
S1 and S2 stop directly at Wenzhou Airport and connect with areas including Wenzhou South Railway Station. Fares depend on distance, starting at ¥2 ($0.30), and you can buy them at station machines or through supported mobile apps. Airport rail is usually the easiest way to avoid road traffic.
Bus and tram
for convenience

Taxi
for convenience or late hours
Taxis and DiDi are useful for hotels, Jiangxin Islet access, and late arrivals. Wenzhou Airport to central Lucheng generally takes 35 to 50 minutes and commonly costs ¥70–¥140 ($10–$20). Use official ranks or the airport’s dedicated ride-hailing area.

Tip: Visit in the morning, then continue toward central Lucheng for lunch.

Entry: Tickets cost ¥30 ($4.50).
Tip: Arrive in the afternoon and stay until the riverfront lights come on.

Yandang Mountain
Yandang Mountain is known for volcanic peaks, narrow valleys, waterfalls, and major scenic areas including Lingfeng, Lingyan, and Dalongqiu. It requires a full-day outing from Wenzhou and offers a very different landscape from the urban riverfront.

A 5-day plan in Wenzhou
Five days give you enough time for Wenzhou’s central streets, Ou River, museum, wetlands, and one full regional outing without trying to combine several distant attractions in the same day.
Land at Wenzhou Longwan International Airport (WNZ), then take the S1 rail or a taxi toward central Lucheng. The airport station connects directly with Terminal 2, while a taxi into the center generally takes 35 to 50 minutes and costs ¥70–¥140 ($10–$20). After check-in, keep the evening around Wuma Street for dinner and a short walk instead of adding a museum or river crossing.

Start at Wenzhou Museum and allow 2 to 3 hours for the history, art, and local-culture galleries. Have lunch nearby, then travel toward the Ou River and continue to Jiangxin Islet for the afternoon. Allow another 2 to 3 hours for the island’s temples, pagodas, gardens, and river views. Stay until late afternoon or early evening before returning to Wuma Street for dinner instead of adding another distant stop.

Leave Wenzhou early for Yandang Mountain and reserve most of the day for the outing. Travel times depend on whether you use rail and local transfers or a private car, so allow substantial time beyond the 5 to 7 hours needed for the main scenic areas. Focus on two or three areas such as Lingfeng, Lingyan, and Dalongqiu instead of trying to cover the entire mountain complex. Return to central Wenzhou for dinner after the longer day.

Travel east in the morning toward Longwan Mangrove Wetland and allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the boardwalks and birdwatching areas. Check tide conditions before leaving, since low and high tide produce very different views. Have lunch in Longwan, then return toward central Wenzhou for a quieter afternoon along the Ou River or around Wuma Street. Keeping the second half of the day central avoids another long trip after the wetland visit.

Use your final morning for shopping, breakfast, and any central street you missed earlier. Wuma Street works particularly well because it keeps food, shops, and cafés in one compact area before departure. Return to your hotel for luggage, then take S1 rail or a taxi to Wenzhou Longwan International Airport. Leave additional time for traffic if you choose a car, especially during weekday commuting periods.
