October 2026 brings novelty to a market shaken by disruptions since the beginning of the year. Most changes this month land between October 23 and 31, many of them on October 25, when airlines worldwide reset their schedules for the winter season.

For business-class travelers, this makes October a month of expanding options, a contrast to the disruptions that shaped earlier months this year. A US airline flies nonstop to Riyadh for the first time, two airlines bring retrofitted cabins to new routes, and Gulf carriers resume flights and grow their networks even as several international airlines stay away. The month also marks the end of an era, as Lufthansa retires one of its signature plane models.

Executive snapshot: what is shaping October 2026

  • A US airline flies nonstop to Riyadh for the first time: Delta Air Lines launches three weekly Atlanta–Riyadh flights on October 23.
  • European airlines add new routes: TAP Air Portugal launches flights to Orlando and Tel Aviv, while British Airways starts operating flights to Colombo and Barbados.
  • Middle East routes return and expand: Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways resume long-suspended service this month, and Etihad and Qatar Airways further expand their networks.
  • Retrofitted cabins reach new routes: United Airlines brings its Elevated Boeing 787-9 to three new Houston routes, and Emirates deploys a retrofitted Airbus A380 to Paris.
  • Lufthansa retires its last Airbus A340-600s: The airline operates its final quadjet flights on October 18, ending a 24-year history.

Delta becomes the first US airline to fly nonstop to Riyadh

Delta Air Lines becomes the first US carrier to offer direct flights to Riyadh (RUH), launching from Atlanta (ATL) on October 23. During the first week after the launch, until October 30, the airline will offer daily flights on this route; then, it will offer three weekly flights. Delta Air Lines will operate these flights using Airbus A350-900 planes, equipped with signature Delta One seats in business class.

European airlines add new routes

Toward the end of October 2026, TAP Air Portugal and British Airways introduce new routes.

TAP Air Portugal adds several routes to its schedule this month. Among them are Lisbon (LIS) to Orlando (MCO), launching October 29 with three weekly flights, and Porto (OPO) to Tel Aviv (TLV), launching October 25 with four weekly flights.

  • The airline will use its flagship aircraft, Airbus A330-900neo, on the Lisbon (LIS) to Orlando (MCO) route. This plane model features 34 lie-flat business-class seats in a spacious, newest-generation Airspace cabin.

Besides, British Airways returns to Sri Lanka on October 23 with seasonal three flights a week between London Gatwick (LGW) and Colombo (CMB). Two days later, on October 25, British Airways launches a new daily route from London Gatwick (LGW) to Barbados (BGI), offering more options for travelers who want to spend the winter holidays by the ocean.

Middle East routes return and expand

Airlines are gradually restoring Middle East routes this month, more than seven months after airspace closures disrupted the region.

  • Cathay Pacific will resume its daily service from Hong Kong (HKG) to Dubai (DXB) on October 25 and its four weekly flights from Hong Kong (HKG) to Riyadh (RUH) on October 26. The airline has pushed the resumption back twice since first suspending these routes in March.
  • Qatar Airways resumes flights to Zanzibar (ZNZ) and Qassim (ELQ) in Saudi Arabia on October 25, followed by flights to Taif (TIF) in Saudi Arabia on October 31.

Despite the regional instability that keeps multiple international airlines from returning to the Middle East, Gulf carriers are expanding their flight networks this month.

  • Etihad Airways becomes the first Middle Eastern carrier to fly nonstop between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Luxembourg (LUX) on October 29, when it launches three weekly flights on this route. The airline will operate Airbus A321LR aircraft with a three-class cabin that includes first-class suites and lie-flat business-class seats.
  • Qatar Airways increases capacity on several routes starting October 25. The airline will now operate seven weekly flights to Montreal (YUL), 56 weekly flights to London Heathrow (LHR), and over 18 weekly flights to Phuket (HKT), the Maldives (MLE), and Kuala Lumpur (KUL).

As flights are gradually renewed, the Middle East is slowly regaining its position as an important connection hub for travelers worldwide.

Retrofitted cabins reach new destinations

premium flight cabin seats

This month, two airlines are extending their retrofitted aircraft to both new routes and routes usually operated by older-generation planes.

United Airlines brings its newest Elevated Boeing 787-9 aircraft to three new routes from Houston (IAH) starting October 24: Sao Paulo (GRU), Tokyo Narita (NRT), and Sydney (SYD).

  • What sets this retrofit apart is that United Airlines removed 35 seats from the aircraft specifically to expand its premium cabins. The configuration now includes 222 seats total, including eight Polaris Studio suites and 56 standard Polaris seats, as opposed to the 48 Polaris seats in the standard version of the aircraft.

Polaris Studio suites are the airline’s top-tier premium seats. Each suite is equipped with privacy doors, an extra ottoman seat, and a 27-inch 4k OLED screen. In addition, Polaris Studio passengers can enjoy caviar service during their flight.

Emirates deploys a retrofitted Airbus A380 on the Dubai (DXB) to Paris (CDG) route starting October 25, operating daily. The retrofitted aircraft features a premium economy cabin for the first time and also brings refreshed first, business, and economy cabins.

  • The entire interior, from carpets to seats, has been renewed and now features an updated cream, bronze, and sky blue palette, along with the airline’s signature ghaf tree motif. The airline also added 18 business-class seats during the retrofit.

Lufthansa retires its last Airbus A340-600s

Lufthansa carries out its final Airbus A340-600 flights on October 18, ending a 24-year run for the longest passenger aircraft in its fleet. The aircraft’s retirement also marks the end of the last major Airbus A340-600 passenger fleet anywhere in commercial service.

  • At 247 feet, the Airbus A340-600 is longer than an Airbus A380 and trails only the Boeing 747-8 among passenger quadjets still flying. Lufthansa introduced the aircraft to its fleet 24 years ago, became its largest operator worldwide, and offered it as a premium-heavy option on long-haul routes.
  • Until October 18, the airline operates the aircraft on two routes: Frankfurt (FRA) to New York (JFK) and Frankfurt (FRA) to Washington Dulles (IAD). After that, Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, the closest match in length among Lufthansa’s newer aircraft, will take over these routes.

Thus, aviation enthusiasts who want to fly on one of Lufthansa’s last quadjets still have an opportunity to do that this October.

Final thoughts on October 2026

October continues the shift away from the disruptions that shaped the year’s earlier months, and this time the news favors travelers.

If Saudi Arabia is on your list, you can now fly there nonstop from the US for the first time, with Delta Air Lines’ new Atlanta to Riyadh route. And if your next trip runs through Houston with United Airlines or connects Dubai to Paris with Emirates, you can expect newly retrofitted premium cabins starting October 24.

At the same time, not every part of the market has caught up. Travelers looking for long-haul routes through Dubai or Riyadh will find a mixed picture: airlines like Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways are returning and expanding service this month, while several other international airlines remain away from the region. Travelers curious about Lufthansa’s last Airbus A340-600 planes have one final chance to see them, with the type’s retirement scheduled for October 18.

Follow how these changes develop in next month’s briefing.
