Lufthansa A380 business class currently comes in two distinct versions. Most aircraft still carry the older cabin, while Lufthansa is introducing the new product one retrofit at a time.

That makes the individual aircraft important when you book. This guide explains how the two cabins differ, which A380s have already been upgraded, and how to identify the version scheduled for your flight before you book.

What Lufthansa’s new A380 business class seat offers

lufthansa a380 business class seating layout

The new Lufthansa Airbus A380-800 business class cabin features the Thompson Aero Vantage XL seat. Lufthansa markets it as “Premium XXL” and replaces the old 2-2-2 arrangement with a staggered 1-2-1 configuration, where seats alternate position from one row to the next.

The features of the new seats include:

  • Seat width: 22.8 inches (58 cm)
  • Bed length: At least 6 feet 7 inches (2 meters) in lie-flat mode
  • Aisle access: Direct access from every seat
  • Audio: Bluetooth pairing for compatible personal headphones
  • Privacy: Adjustable partitions between neighboring seats

The new 1-2-1 layout reduces the business class cabin from 78 seats to 68. That removes one of the main limitations of the old 2-2-2 cabin: window passengers no longer need to pass a seatmate to reach the aisle.

Privacy is also more flexible in the new cabin. The added partitions let solo travelers create more separation when they want it, while those traveling together can keep the space between their seats more open.

Which Lufthansa A380 you’ll actually be flying on

Three Lufthansa A380s, identified by their registration (tail) numbers D-AIMC, D-AIMB, and D-AIMH, currently carry the new business class cabin. The other five aircraft, D-AIMA, D-AIMK, D-AIML, D-AIMM, and D-AIMN, still have the older 2-2-2 product. This means the cabin you get depends on the individual aircraft assigned to your flight, not the route itself.

D-AIMC started the rollout when it returned to passenger service on April 23, 2026, operating from Munich to Los Angeles. Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden carries out the cabin conversions alongside scheduled maintenance, and the first aircraft spent just under 12 weeks there. Lufthansa plans to complete the retrofit across all eight A380s by mid-2027.

After each retrofit, Lufthansa returns the aircraft to service from Munich. According to Lufthansa’s August 17, 2026, update, A380s with the new business class are primarily flying from Munich (MUC) to:

  • Boston (BOS)
  • Washington, D.C. (IAD)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Mumbai (BOM)

Lufthansa’s A380 service to Boston, Washington, and Mumbai ends with the switch to the winter schedule in late October. When the winter season begins, Lufthansa flies the A380 from Munich to Bangkok, Delhi, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Lufthansa does not reserve those routes exclusively for retrofitted aircraft. An older A380 can replace one with the new cabin within the schedule, so seeing one of these destinations does not confirm the seat you will get. The Lufthansa A380 business class seat map is the reliable place to check instead.

How to use the Lufthansa A380 business class seat map to identify your cabin

To identify your cabin, open the Lufthansa A380 business class seat map and check the last business class row: the older 2-2-2 cabin ends at row 24, while the retrofitted 1-2-1 cabin continues to row 28. The new cabin is also easy to recognize by its four seats across and its 68-seat business section.

In the retrofitted cabin, the seat map also shows two seat categories that carry an extra fee for travel from September 15, 2026:

  • Privacy Seats: the A and K seats positioned right by the window, away from the aisle.
  • Extra Long Bed seats: a bed of at least 2.12 meters (6 feet 11 inches), extending to 2.22 meters (7 feet 3 inches) in seats 24A and 24K.

You should choose these seats in advance.

If you choose your seat later, you can open the map again through My Bookings or during check-in. It is worth checking again closer to your flight because Lufthansa can change the aircraft for operational reasons. If that happens, the seat map will reflect the update.

What you’ll actually get in Lufthansa A380 business class right now

The older Collins Diamond cabin is still the more common Lufthansa A380 business class product. Thus, until the five aircraft still awaiting retrofit receive the new seats, the older Collins Diamond cabin is the one most Lufthansa A380 business class passengers will fly in. Both the newer and older versions provide lie-flat beds, but the two products differ much more clearly in aisle access, privacy, cabin density, and onboard technology.

Here is how the two Lufthansa Airbus A380 business class cabins compare:

The pitch figures need some context. The older Collins seats are arranged in straight rows, while the Vantage XL uses a staggered layout that fits the seats more closely together. This is why the new seat has a 44-inch pitch but still extends into a lie-flat bed at least 6 feet 7 inches (2 meters) long.

Additionally, Lufthansa charges up to €170 ($190) for the privacy seat and the extra-long bed.

How stable Lufthansa’s A380 program actually is

lufthansa a380 business class seats cabin interior

Lufthansa operates eight Airbus A380s, all based at Munich Airport (MUC), and expects to keep them in service into the 2030s.

That was not the plan a few years ago. In 2021, Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr said the airline had “permanently decommissioned” its A380s and later said they would not return. Lufthansa reversed that decision in 2022 as long-haul demand recovered and deliveries of newer aircraft fell behind schedule. The A380 returned to scheduled passenger flights in 2023, while Lufthansa waited for Boeing 787s and 777Xs, and additional Airbus A350s.

In late 2025, Spohr said Lufthansa expected to operate the A380 for at least another five years. He also said its eventual retirement would depend partly on deliveries of the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 777X, along with market conditions later in the decade.

The retrofit program supports that outlook. Lufthansa is installing a new business class cabin across all eight A380s, with the work continuing through mid-2027. Investing in new cabins across the entire fleet shows that the airline still expects to get meaningful use from the aircraft after the upgrades are complete.

For context, some A380 operators have already set much longer timelines for the aircraft. Emirates, for example, has publicly committed to keeping its A380 fleet in service into the early 2040s. Lufthansa has made no such commitment. The five-year horizon Spohr described is a minimum, not an end date, and the airline has not named a retirement year.

Key takeaway

Lufthansa’s A380 business class will continue changing through 2026 and 2027. With each retrofit taking under 12 weeks and all eight aircraft due for completion by mid-2027, the chances of finding the new 1-2-1 cabin will keep increasing. The older 2-2-2 product is still more common today, but it will gradually become the exception as the remaining aircraft receive the new seats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which seats on Lufthansa’s A380 are the best?

The best Lufthansa A380 business class seats for solo travelers on the retrofitted aircraft are the dedicated privacy seats, while travelers flying together may prefer the center pair with the divider open. Privacy seats are positioned farther from the aisle, while Lufthansa also offers classic seats and extra long bed seats in the new cabin. The privacy seat and extra long bed options can cost up to €170 ($190) to select. On the older 2-2-2 A380, an aisle seat is the better choice if you want to leave your seat without passing another passenger.

Is business class on Lufthansa worth it?

Lufthansa A380 business class is worth it for travelers who want to sleep on a long-haul overnight flight, because every business-class seat converts into a fully flat bed, while premium economy and economy seats only recline. On daytime flights, the bed matters less, so the extra cost over premium economy mainly buys more personal space and, in the retrofitted cabin, direct aisle access from every seat. The fare also isn’t the full cost: Lufthansa charges up to €170 (about $195) per flight for a Privacy Seat or an Extra Long Bed seat, unless the traveler holds qualifying Miles & More status or a Business Flex fare.

Does Lufthansa still fly the A380?

Lufthansa still flies all eight Airbus A380s from Munich, with three aircraft already carrying the new business class cabin. In late 2025, CEO Carsten Spohr said Lufthansa was planning to operate the A380 for at least another five years. The airline is also continuing the retrofit across the remaining aircraft through mid-2027. Lufthansa has not set a final retirement date, however, so the current plan confirms continued service into the next decade without defining how long the A380 will remain in the fleet.
